How it works

How to make a transparent QR code

The background is already set to transparent. Check the chessboard pattern in the preview: it shows the see-through areas.

01

Add your link

Paste the address or text. The code appears immediately, with no white box around it.

02

Pick a dark color

Choose the code color so it contrasts with what is behind it. Dark code on a light surface scans best.

03

Download PNG or SVG

The PNG keeps its transparent background (alpha channel). The SVG is a vector with no background shape at all.

Where it works

Using a QR code with no background

Good places

  • Light photos and plain colors — a pale wall, a white box or a cream label: the code is just ink on top.
  • Packaging and labels — print the code straight onto the pack color without a patch of white.
  • Slides, posters and documents — place a PNG or SVG over a background in Canva, PowerPoint or Word.
  • Merch and signs — the vector file is ready for a print shop to place on any surface.

Where to be careful

  • Busy or dark backgrounds. A scanner needs a clear, quiet area around the code. On a patterned photo, put the code on a plain patch or give it a solid background instead.
  • Light code on dark. Some readers cannot read inverted codes. Dark code on a light background is the safe choice.
  • Dark mode and dark pages. A transparent code with dark dots disappears on a dark page. Place it on a light surface.

Transparent PNG or SVG?

PNG is a picture with an alpha channel: it opens everywhere and is simplest for slides and websites. SVG is a vector: it has no background at all, stays sharp when scaled and is the format print shops prefer. Download both and use the one your tool accepts.

Check it before you print

Place the code on its real background and scan it from the distance people will use. The health report and the color checker point out low contrast.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do I make a QR code with a transparent background?

Enter your link and keep the background on “transparent” (the chessboard swatch). Download the PNG for a transparent image or the SVG for a vector without a background.

Does the transparent PNG really have no background?

Yes. The PNG is saved with an alpha channel, so the areas around the dots are fully see-through. Open it on a colored layer and the color shows through.

Will a transparent QR code scan?

Yes, as long as there is enough contrast between the code and what is behind it. Dark dots on a light, plain surface scan like any other code.

Can I put a transparent QR code on a photo?

On a calm, light area of the photo, yes. On a busy or dark area, scanning becomes unreliable. Put the code on a plain patch or use a solid background.

Which format is best for printing?

Use the SVG for professional printing. It is vector and has no background. The 2048 px PNG is enough for most home and office prints.
