What makes a code high quality

Five things that decide print quality

Resolution is only one of them. A sharp file with low contrast still scans badly.

01

Resolution or vector

A PNG at 2048 or 4096 px is plenty for most prints. An SVG is a vector and never gets soft edges, at any size.

02

Contrast

Dark dots on a light, plain background. Low contrast is the most common reason a good-looking code fails.

03

Quiet zone

Keep a blank border of about four dots around the code. Cropping it hurts scanning more than a small size does.

Print size

How big should the file be?

At 300 dpi (the usual print resolution) a PNG needs about 118 pixels per centimetre of printed width.

PNG or SVG?

Choose PNG for screens, slides and everyday prints. Choose SVG for large prints, signs and anything a print shop will scale: it has no pixels to blur. If you only have a PNG for a big print, download the 4096 px size.

Scan a printed sample at its real size with two phones. The size calculator gives the minimum size for your scanning distance, and the health report scores contrast and density.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What resolution is best for a QR code?

2048 px is enough for most prints up to about A5. Use 4096 px for larger prints, or the SVG, which has no fixed resolution and stays sharp at any size.

Are the codes from BestQR high quality?

Yes. PNG downloads are up to 4096 px and the SVG is a true vector. There is no watermark and no compression of the code itself.

Is the SVG really vector?

Yes. It describes the code as shapes, so it can be enlarged to a billboard without blur and opened in any design tool.

Why does my QR code look blurry when I print it?

The usual causes are a small PNG stretched to a larger size, or a screenshot used as the file. Download the 4096 px PNG or the SVG instead.

Does a bigger file make the code scan better?

Not by itself. Contrast, a clear quiet zone and a sensible printed size matter more. A large file just prevents blur at a large print size.
