Scanning a QR code takes a few seconds, and you almost certainly do not need an extra app. Here is how it works on each device.
On iPhone
- Open the Camera app.
- Point it at the QR code so the whole code is visible.
- Tap the banner that appears at the top of the screen.
If nothing happens, check that Scan QR Codes is on in Settings → Camera. You can also add the Code Scanner to Control Center.
On Android
- Open the Camera app. Most recent phones recognize QR codes automatically.
- Point at the code and tap the link or suggestion that appears.
If your camera does not scan codes, use Google Lens or the scanner in your quick settings (the exact name varies by manufacturer).
From a screenshot or saved image
You cannot point a camera at the code on the same screen. Use the free QR code decoder to upload an image and read what is inside. It works entirely in your browser.
On a computer
Open the online QR code scanner and allow camera access, or use the decoder to read an image. Neither sends your image or the result to a server.
If a QR code will not scan
- Move closer or further away until the code fills about half the view.
- Improve the light and avoid glare on glossy paper.
- Make sure the whole code and its blank border are in frame.
- Clean the lens.

Stay safe
- Check the link preview before you tap it. Make sure the domain is what you expected.
- Be careful with codes stuck over other codes, on parking meters or unsolicited mail.
- Never enter passwords or payment details on a page you reached from a code you do not trust.
- Use the decoder to see where a code leads before you open it.
